Field Guide
How to read a skincare ingredient label
A few simple rules turn the back of any bottle from intimidating chemistry into a clear story about what you're putting on
01
Order is concentration
By regulation, ingredients are listed in descending order by weight down to 1%. The first five items typically make up 70–80% of the formula - that's where the real story is.
02
Below 1%, order is flexible
Once a formula passes the 1% mark, brands can list remaining ingredients in any order. Active ingredients are often placed strategically - read the brand's percentage claims, not just position.
03
Watch the 'fragrance' line
'Fragrance' or 'parfum' can mask dozens of undisclosed compounds, including known allergens. If you have sensitive or reactive skin, this is the first line to scrutinize.
04
Know the families
Most ingredients fall into a handful of roles: solvents, humectants, emollients, preservatives, actives, surfactants, and fragrance. Grouping by role makes a long list feel much shorter.
05
Context beats fear
A 'scary' chemical name isn't automatically harmful - phenoxyethanol at 0.5% is well-tolerated, but the same molecule at 2% can sting. Concentration, pairing, and skin tolerance all matter.
